Angela Lathrop

Angela is attending Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Oregon, majoring in Accounting.  Angela's experience with cancer has helped her be thankful to be alive and to learn to appreciate each and every day.  She has survived Papillary Thyroid Cancer.  In her own words:

“In 2008, everything changed for me.  I was diagnosed with Cancer.  Since this life-changing event, I have done some serious 'soul searching,'  and in the Fall of 2008, I decided to change my life.  I am taking a stand to do something more for me and my family than what I have done so far.  I am no longer happy with just getting by; I no longer want to rely on food stamps to feed my children.  I want something more for my family.  I still plan on maintaining my job; I work 32 hours per week as an Office Manager, which is where I have been for the last 3 years.  Since my diagnosis and treatment, I have started back to school (Fall Term 2008), and I have been going ever since.

My career goal is to stay in the same line of work that I've been doing, Accounting and Human Resources.  I would like a get a two-year transfer degree, and then go to Linfield College (where I've already been accepted) sometime next year.  At Linfield, I will get a Bachelors in Accounting, with a minor in Human Resources.  I love the work that I do, but I have reached an income plateau with the limited education I have.  It's hard to watch people pass me up with promotions and raises when I know that I am capable, but I lack the required Bachelor degree to be promoted.

Cancer has helped to change my life.  I am 'thankful' that I had cancer.  Cancer made me thankful to be alive, and now I appreciate each and every day.  I work hard everyday, and then when I get home from work, I work even harder.  I provide for my children, and I teach them the value of education by showing them what hard work is about.  I hope to also be able to show them that hard work pays off in the end."
